“For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.” I Peter 1:18-19
Back in the good old days we had Green Stamps. As a child I spent a great deal of time helping my mother stick all those stamps in the special books. Mom would get the stamps whenever she went shopping. The number of stamps she received depended on how much money she spent. There was a catalog of all the things you could get using the Green Stamps and how many books each item cost. When we had enough books filled she would take them to the Green Stamp Redemption Center and redeem them for something our family needed or wanted.
Webster’s Dictionary defines redeem this way, “To regain possession of by paying a specified sum. To turn in and receive something in exchange.”
Peter tells us in his letter that we are redeemed. Gold and silver were not used to redeem us. We were retrieved or bought back from our lives of sin by the shedding of the blood of Christ. A high price was paid for our salvation. God cared so much for us He had His own son pay that price. Jesus suffered on the cross in exchange for our souls. We can be assured of eternal life because of the “specified sum” Jesus paid to save our lives.
By accepting Him and what He put down for us, we can put on the HELMET OF SALVATION. During battles, soldiers wear helmets to protect their heads. The HELMET OF SALVATION protects our thoughts. That HELMET reminds us of the fact that Jesus redeemed us. He paid an exorbitant price or us and He is going to protect His possessions. If we ask Him, by putting on the HELMET, He will keep the thoughts out of our minds that Satan tries to put in. The HELMET OF SALVATION provides a barrier keeping the devil out and letting in thoughts of Christ. We are redeemed! The choice is yours. Are you going to accept and wear the HELMET OF SALVATION?
APPLICATION: You do not have to put up with thoughts that cause you pain and worry. When those thoughts enter your mind remember who saved you and the price He paid. Call on Jesus and He will replace those negative thoughts with ones that will give you peace.
