Live In Peace (The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace)

“Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.”  Hebrews 12:14

“Live in peace.” Easy to say, not so easy to do. Wars are taking place around the world. There are senseless fighting and killing by gangs in our cities. There is turmoil in families. Yet we are told to “make every effort to live in peace with all men.” Is this even possible?

Look to Jesus. How many times was He ridiculed? How often did people want to be rid of Him?  Even when He was being tortured and crucified how did He respond? In peace. He relied on Scripture for His comebacks. He would just leave the towns where the people would not listen to Him. He told His disciples to turn the other cheek.

In today’s society people think living by Jesus’ example will make us a doormat for every bully to walk over. On the contrary, keeping control of ourselves and not fighting back gives our enemies nothing to grab hold of. If we respond by fighting back they will keep fighting. If we stand our ground showing peace and love the bully is caught off guard.  He doesn’t know how to respond. He becomes confused and has no comeback. Look how often Jesus responded with peaceful answers and His enemies would walk away because they had no rebuttal. God gave us the SHOES OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE.

When Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wilderness He did not argue or fight. Jesus responded by quoting Scripture. Finally the devil realized he couldn’t win so he left. Satan loves turmoil and confusion. He doesn’t know how to handle confidence, conviction, peace, and love. All these things we get from the Lord. God does not want us to respond to trouble with more trouble. We are to stand firm and strong in His peace. Let’s wear THE SHOES OF PEACE and not give satisfaction to the enemy. We can remain confident through the peace and love of Christ.

APPLICATION:  The next time someone confronts you how will you respond?
