“Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in your faith, because you know that your brothers (and sisters) throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of suffering.” I Peter 5:8-9
Temptations abound all round us. We get hit from all sides: TV shows and commercials; our peers; societal values; even thoughts Satan tries to put in our minds. It is difficult to resist these enticements and when we do , we submit ourselves to possible ridicule and rejection. This is the way Satan launches his attacks. You and I are not the only ones dealing with this. Christians all round the world are experiencing ridicule, rejection, and in many cases, even persecution and death.
How can we fight these temptations which bombard us everyday? Peter provided the answer, “Be self-controlled and alert.” We must constantly be on the lookout for the diversions the devil wants to put in our way. Secondly, Peter said, “Resist him, standing firm in the faith.”
God has provided a piece of armor to do just that: THE SHIELD OF FAITH. A shield is not a stationary piece of equipment. It can be moved to block arrows and spears coming from all directions. THE SHIELD OF FAITH works the same way. We don’t wear it like we do the other pieces of armor We carry it, holding it in front of us, moving it as needed to confront assaults from any direction. We plant our feet firmly with our SHIELD before us. We must be vigilant, aware of everything happening around us.
Relying on our faith in God will give us the shield we need to block temptations as they appear. Not only will we have protection, but our faith will also provide us with the courage to face whatever comes our way when we resist those temptations.
Think of THE SHIELD OF FAITH as God standing in front of you. Through our faith in Him we know He is on guard. Even with God on our side the war with Satan is not easy to fight. The strength of our faith will be persistently tested. There may be times we are caught with our shield down. Let those times serve as reminders we must keep THE SHIELD OF FAITH up. We must stand firm in that faith. “And the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will Himself restore you and make you strong, firm, and steadfast.” (verse 10)
APPLICATION: Are you dealing with a strong temptation in your life? Where is your SHIELD OF FAITH? Hold the SHIELD in front of you and trust in the protection provided by your faith to help you resist.
