Pay Attention (The Sword of the Spirit)

armor-of-godAnd we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 2Peter 1:19

As we grew up our parents told us about right and wrong. They did not make up the things they informed us about, or did they make up rules that were ridiculous (although we may have thought so at the time). Everything they taught us was to help us grow up and live in society. By the time we became adults we knew what was acceptable and what wasn’t in order to live, work, and socialize with other people.

The Apostle Peter tells us the things found in Scripture are not made up either. The writings of the New Testament were by men who either actually witnessed the events or experienced the changes in thought and action around the known world at that time because of Jesus.

We also have the Old Testament prophecies. These were not stories made up by people to make themselves sound important. The prophecies were actual words of God given to a select few to pass on to the people. The prophets used by the Lord did not change the words to their own interpretation. They relayed the words just as God had revealed them.

With all the spiritual battles around and in us we must pay attention to the guidance provided for us through Scripture. The SWORD OF THE SPIRIT, which is the word of God found in the Bible, is our weapon to fight the battles.

As our parents have given us instructions on how to function in society so does knowing the Bible help us function midst the evil in this world. We can experience guidance, strength, and encouragement through God’s word to deal with every situation we find ourselves in.

As warriors use swords to defend themselves and to attack, our SWORD OF THE SPIRIT can be used defensively and offensively when we are face to face with evil and temptations.

The SWORD provided by God is more powerful than anything Satan has in his arsenal. Pay attention to what is written in Scripture. Take it to heart and follow it and you will possess a mighty weapon to use in the war with the prince of darkness. This SWORD OF THE SPIRIT can be your “light shining in a dark place”.

APPLICATION: Explore the Bible. Learn how God helped people deal with difficult situations. The more you know of God’s power, the more you can overcome.
