IM000033.JPGDoesn’t that fire look inviting? I would love to sit in a comfortable chair in front of that fire and not have a care in the world. Maybe curl up with a good book or just daydream with a mug of hot chocolate.  PROCRASTINATION

I have started the new year reading a daily devotional by Charles Stanley – “Enter His Gates”. Today’s reading really hit home. It is all about procrastination.

“Whoever watches the wind will not plant; whoever looks at the clouds will not reap.” (Ecclesiastes 11:4)

Staring out the window daydreaming, playing on facebook, absently watching TV are forms of procrastination if we have a project we should be working on. Do you have a deadline to meet soon? Is there a book or article waiting to be written?

Why do we procrastinate when we know there are things to be done?

Some of it might be fear. We want to write that novel or article, but are afraid we are not good enough to do it.

We might be thinking that even if we write no publisher is going to want it. Do I want to go through the work of self-publishing?

Charles Stanley in today’s devotional said this, “Procrastination can cause us to miss out on God’s best for our lives. When we fail to confront an issue or a situation, we fail to develop the godly, positive character desired by God. By hesitating, we delay God’s blessings.”

I have never thought of procrastination in those terms before. We are delaying God’s blessings. We have no idea what those blessing might be, but do we really want to miss out on them?

As writers, let’s make a pact that we will not allow idle time to manipulate our lives. Sure, some idle time is good. We all need to shut down for a while and recharge. What we don’t need is for idle time to take over.

Assess how you spend your time each day. I know there is a great deal of wasted time during my days – time when I could and should be writing.

Don’t let procrastination get the upper hand this year. We can give up some TV time, some facebook/twitter time and write. Even if it’s only a half an hour let’s do it. We might be very surprised how productive we will become and what blessings God will send our way.
